Shortly after 11:30 am ET, President Trump began his cabinet meeting, focusing on a new economic and jobs initiative. White House officials such as Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Don McGahn, Bill Shine, Ivanka Trump, Jared Kushner, Stephen Miller, and Dan Scavino (as well as Vice President Mike Pences Chief of Staff Nick Ayers) sat in a row behind the president, who was flanked to his right by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo at the table.
Shortly after President Trump made a couple quick remarks on such recurring themes as tax cuts and reform, he yielded the floor to Ivanka, who walked to the front of the room to discuss the administrations private sector commitment to all of our workers. Chief of Staff John Kelly stood behind her by the doorway as she read from her prepared comments.
Wow. So if that were Ivanka Smith, the press would say that was totally brilliant! President Trump joked after she finished (referencing something the president says often, which is that the media supposedly never gives him/them credit), provoking a laugh and a thanks from his daughter and senior adviser.
The president soon started talking about trade with Mexico, and also how hes made no bones about it, regarding his trade standoffs with European leaders, some of whom he said are scheduled to visit him in Washington, DC, on July 25.
Trump underscored that he and his team have in their arsenal the possibility of exacting tremendous retribution on other nations if trade negotiation dont go his way. The president assured people he did not wish to have to resort to such vengeance in the form of policy. He also said cars are the big one when it comes to US-Europe trade.
After hearing from cabinet-level officials, such as Acosta (who spoke of record low unemployment and apprenticeships), Wilbur Ross, Pompeo, Betsy DeVos, Alex Azar, Linda McMahon, Ben Carson, Sonny Purdue, and Pence, the president announced the end of the part of the meeting, running over 40 minutes, that was open to press. As reporters were ushered out of the room, one journalist asked President Trump if he thinks Russia is still targeting the United States and its elections. Trump quickly claimed no, then proceeded to smirk and laugh as reporters filed out. He also mentioned that Russian president Vladimir Putin understands his tough foreign policy a lot better than the media does.
Til next time.
