Flag ceremony

After announcing the shoot down of an Iranian drone - see previous pool reports - President Donald Trump participated in a flag ceremony:

In an East Room ceremony, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte presented President Donald Trump with a Dutch-owned American flag that flew on a Navy ship on D-Day.

“It is my honor to welcome this great American flag back home,” Trump said on receiving the gift.

In presenting the flag, Rutte praised Americans for helping liberate Europe: “Their greatness is embodied in this flag.”

The flag now heads to the Smithsonian. Lonnie Bunch, the New Secretary of the Smithsonian, also spoke at the ceremony.

“What a wonderful gift this is,” Bunch said. “These artifacts teach us lessons about our history and ourselves.”

According to our colleague Jon Decker:

“A flag from the D-Day invasion will be presented to the President this afternoon by the Prime Minister of the Netherlands.

The American flag was flown from the stern of a U.S. Navy vessel during the D-Day invasion in 1944.

The 48-Star U.S. flag that led the first American troops to Utah Beach was purchased at auction by a Dutch art collector three years ago for $514,000. (The flag was retained by the skipper of U.S. Navy vessel LCC 60 - Lieutenant Howard Vander Beek - until his death in 2014.)

The flag - replete with a bullet hole from a German machine gun - will be available for future display in the Smithsonian National Museum of American History (x-apple-data-detectors://3) .”
