POTUS entered the Roosevelt Room at the 4:00 to announce the appointment of Johnny C. Taylor as chair of the President's Board of Advisors on HBCUs.
Standing at a small lectern before a dozen individuals from the board and the Trump administration, POTUS wearing a dark tie and dark suit touted the work of HBCUs,
"They're working hard, doing well and making a very big commitment to them today," POTUS said.
POTUS called the Taylor appointment "very important, and very important to me and the administration."
Among the "great strides" POTUS said his administration had undertaken to benefit HBCUs were a half-billion dollars in his budget proposal for HBCU-focused programs. The recent budget deal, POTUS said, "allows for the forgiveness of any outstanding loans owed under the HBCU Hurricane Supplement Loan Program, which was a very difficult task and it worked out." POTUS also touted and increased opportunities in the Pell Grant program.
Introducing POTUS at the event was Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, who commended both the president and the work of HBCUs.
"This administration seeks to provide education opportunities for all students, especially those underserved and marginalized," DeVos said. "HBCUs play a very important role in American in education. Under President Trump's leadership in supporting and uplifting HBCUs, we are taking important steps to ensure HBCUs and the students they serve remain influential players in their communities and in our country."
Speaking at the event about his appointment, Taylor said HBCUs are seeking to capitalize on the economic growth under the Trump administration.
"Every year, over 300,000 students turn to these institutions for their education and to prepare them for their careers," Taylor said. "This president's advisory board can be a nexus between higher educational institutions and employers."
POTUS exited the Roosevelt Room at 4:09 to the sound of a cacophony of questions from expanded pool. None were answered.
