Swiss President Alain Berset, sitting to POTUS's left, thanked him for coming and noted it had been 18 years since the last U.S. president visited the WEF. "We appreciate the significance of the gesture," Berset said. Two miniature flags sat on a white stand between them. Berset said Switzerland shares the U.S. commitment to freedom, democracy and human rights and said the two nations have “very strong economic relations.”POTUS, wearing a dark blue suit and long red tie, said it was a “great honor” to be there. He was joined again by Tillerson, Cohn and McMaster, as well as U.S. ambassador to Switzerland Ed McMullen.“Davos has been exciting. We’re bringing a lot of things back to our country, including tremendous goodwill.”POTUS noted that he had dinner Thursday with “some of the great business leaders of the world,” who he said were “very happy with what’s happening in the United States.”
“We’re setting records ... believe it or not, we have a long way to go ... We have a tremendous margin up,” POTUS said. “We’ve cut regulations, we passed a tax bill the likes of which our country has never seen.”He noted a provision of the tax bill that opens up a small part of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) for oil and gas drilling, which he said had “tremendous potential.” “We’ve been trying to get ANWR approved since prior to President Reagan.” He also noted that the tax bill repealed the individual mandate, calling it a “very important thing that we got that.” Turning to Switzerland, he called it a “great place” and added: “So many friends in Switzerland.” “You have a lot of our stock,” he added. “I have helped to make Switzerland even richer, and I’m very happy about that.”
POTUS also took a swipe at Democrats: “I will say this with great conviction, that had the opposing party won, in my opinion, because they would have added additional regulation, I believe the markets would’ve been down anywhere from 25 to 50 percent.” That’s it on POTUS’s sked until his 2pm speech.
